John McCain on Letterman and Obama and McCain at the Alfred E. Smith Dinner

Barack Obama and John McCain were quite funny this week at the Alfred E Smith dinner. This dinner is all about the laughs. I loved Obama’s joke that you don’t know the real Obama, as an October surprise I will reveal that my real middle name is Steve, Steve Obama. I also loved how he said my first name Barack comes from my father and my middle name was given to me because they didn’t think I’d run for president. I loved how he said contrary to popular belief, I wasn’t born in a manger. My biggest strength is my humility and my greatest weakness is that maybe I am too awesome. He also said he pals around with a bad crowd- the Senate and said John I think I’ve seen you at some of our meetings. Barack really cracked me up. He was incredibly funny.

John McCain was funny on David Letterman and kept saying he screwed up. He dissed Keith Olbermann and said Keith would have a mission accomplished sign on election night if Obama was elected and said if Keith needed to know where to stick his sign then he should give McCain a call and he will tell him where to put it. He also saidthathis pet name for Obama is that one and Obama’s pet name for him is George Bush. He also poked fun at his own seven houses and Bill and Hillary Clinton saying that she is one person in the room who is pulling for him.

Why can’t our debates be this entertaining?  I actually enjoyed John McCain and I never really have because he always comes off as so mean and vindictive. What do you think? Should our debates have a 30 minute stand up comedy segment?

“Why can’t our debates be this entertaining” = Agreed! I was talking about this yesterday: The Alfred E. Smith Dinner reminded me why I once so admired John McCain… I had forgotten and sometimes I think we need to remember. Good post! ~k
